Our team at Shadow Flies is both the foundation and the secret to our success. They are highly skilled and highly valued. It felt entirely appropriate to treat then to the best possible working conditions that we could provide and that led to the construction of our purpose-built workshop which was completed in 2021.

Clean, functional, spacious efficient and air-conditioned, we and more importantly our staff believe that it is the best fly-tying workshop in the world. Our investment in the workshop is an investment in our staff, and they in turn repay us with an excellence and consistency in what they produce that is unsurpassed. These claims are not just words but can be measured by both the loyalty and growth of all our customers.

Order & Production Process

The end result of a commercially tyed fly is no different to one that originates from an individuals’ tying desk. A fly fit for purpose that is both robust and aesthetically pleasing. The process that allows our team to produce that same hand-tyed product, but at a level of consistency, quality and volume, within an agreed delivery schedule, is dramatically different.

1. Placing an order

The order is received, either via the website, order sheet or client lists for bespoke patterns and requests. Our English-speaking office team will assist clients at every step of the way.

2. Customer Samples

New samples are handled via one of our in house fly-tying experts where they will perfect or fine-tune the products to ensure they are both commercially viable as well as tied with the very best materials available.

3. Order Processing

Harri, our Finish systems manager of 16 years’ experience, will process the order, check availability, create a SKU for new products and provide clients with estimated production timelines. Once all details are confirmed with the client work orders are issued.

4. Work Orders Issued

On receipt of a work order the stock room, will check and issue materials for each batch of flies in individual material bags, whether it be 3, 5 or 50 doz flies, to be assigned to the most appropriate or skilled tyer.

5. Stock Room

Our workshop contains a huge magazine of different types of materials that make it possible to create an infinite amount of unique products.

6. Dying Department

Our in-house dye room and workshop ensures that we can meet very specific client requirements as well as being innovative and responsive to new designs, patterns and innovations.

7. Tyres At Work

Tyers are Issued with the work orders, physical samples and tying instructions as required. On average, our pool of tyers have an incredible 18 years of individual tying experience.

8. Quality Control - (QC)

QC will now individually check each and every fly passed on by the tyers, trimming, adjusting or rejecting if necessary, to ensure unparalleled levels of quality and uniformity. Our QC team are the crème de la crème of our tying workforce.

9. Varnish & Finish

The 'Glue Room' is the final stage in the fly construction process, with varnish, decals, and tubing trimmed and perfected. The heads of our flies are one of the signature features that allow our flies to stand out from all others!

10. Packing

An area that can be overlooked, but absolutely critical to ensuring the flies depart immaculately presented, safely prepared for shipping and often in customer-designed packaging.

11. Shipping

The final part of the journey, but no less vital, ensuring that orders depart in the correct quantities (orders might consist of 10,000 products/shipping box) along with the paperwork to ensure smooth international travel. Our flies are shipped worldwide.
